Apologies and No Announcements
Hi. Hello. Good day. Ahoy.
Let’s get stuck in. In 2013 I made a promise. I said I’d ‘update this blog regularly’.
Now, it’s important to be honest.
In the words of everybody’s favourite silly man with a sad face, Nick Clegg, “Many of you tell me that you’re glad that at a time of real degree-related uncertainty, I put aside my blog, to provide myself with a stable 2:1. But I also meet people who are disappointed and angry that I couldn’t keep all my promises.
It was a pledge made with the best of intentions, but I shouldn’t have made a promise I wasn’t absolutely sure I would be able to keep.
I’m sorry, I’m sorry, I’m so, so sorry. There’s no easy way to say it. I’m sorry.’”
And like Nick Clegg, I expect you all to now forgive me, trust me again, and vote for me in the General Election. Glad that’s sorted.
So, we last spoke on here well over a year ago. Let me bring you up to speed. I’d just heard that I was going to be doing some bits for BBC Norfolk. That was lovely; I did lots of fun stuff during my time there, and got to interview some fab people. Authors, actors, singers, dancers, trapeze artists, Walk off the Earth (who did not appreciate my game of ‘Walk off the Earth or I’d rather Give Birth’) and Rich Hall (d’you know Matt Groening based ‘Moe’ from The Simpsons on Rich? Cool, right?)
I continued working for BBC Norf during the 2014 Edinburgh Festival Fringe, which was also super fun. After that summer, I ended my time there, and went to York determined to crack on with my third and final year of uni, and my final year of student radio.
SIDEBAR: Since we last spoke, I’ve held the posts of Station Manager, Assistant Station Manager, Head of Events, and Social Secretary at URY. IT’S BEEN A BUSY 18 MONTHS.
All the time, people ask me what I’m doing radio-wise, if anyone’s about to hire me, if I’ve got a secret I’m not telling anyone, if I’m actually moving to Australia to go and do an outback breakfast show… Here’s the answer: No. Over the last two years, I’ve been lucky enough to have some amazing meetings, with some amazing people, in some amazing buildings, which I used to dream about walking into as a wee tot. But nobody’s hired me yet. Sad Face. BUT THAT AIN’T GONNA STOP ME TEAM, OH NO.
This leads me nicely onto some good news! I’m absolutely over the flipping moon to be nominated for Best Male and Best Entertainment Programming at the 2015 National Student Radio Awards. Some of you may know that in 2013, after my first year of not really knowing what I was doing, I was nominated for the aforementioned 2, and Best Newcomer. Bonkers. Absolutely bonkers.
In 2014, despite pouring everything into my URY show, I didn’t manage to pick up any noms. So, after my final year, to receive these two nods was just the best, I had all the feels, and a small, masculine cry (lol).
I was also super-happy that as Head of Events, URY’s ERN got a nomination, and as a manager, that the station totalled 6 noms (up last year from a solitary 1). Wooooo.
So that brings us up to speed, radio-wise! I’ve been doing lots of other stuff to keep busy (theatre-y writing-y comedy(y) sort of stuff), and maybe I’ll talk about all that in another post. And just wait until you hear about how I’m actually paying my bills at the moment. That deserves a post all to itself.
But this one is about my first love, the thing that excites me above anything else in the world, the radio.
I’ll love ya forever and ever URY. Here’s a photo of me taken after my first show in 2012. Ah, youth. Oh, and despite what this website depicts I don’t have floppy 2010 Justin Bieber hair anymore.
Also, since I’ve been away I’ve very kindly been awarded these things, but tbh they didn’t really fit into the flow of the blog, and I didn’t know where to put them, so right at the end as a sort of epilogue seems fine.
